Girls’ Basketball to Play Tonight at TD Garden
by Christina McLaughlin
On Saturday, the Braintree High School girl’s basketball team took on Newton North at UMass Boston. Though Braintree was favored to win, Newton North gave them a run for their money. Newton North came out strong scoring first and setting the pace for the rest of the game. Their intensity surprised the Braintree girls and by the end of the first quarter Newton North was winning 15 to 8. The Braintree team seemed a bit frustrated, but they did not give up. Their determination; however, did not seem to help them as the first half ended with Newton North still comfortably in the lead with a whopping 32 points, while Braintree only had 18.
The Wamps came out strong in the second half and began to close the gap. Though they did not catch up to Newton North in the third quarter, they began to regain their momentum ending 39 to 45. As the fourth quarter began you could see that the Braintree girls were not giving up. They fought hard and with roughly four minutes and thirty seconds left in the final quarter Braintree took the lead! They ended the game 45 to 58 with Braintree winning. Braintree was down by 21 at one point but they didn’t give up, and for their resilience they were rewarded by being named the MIAA Division One South Champions.
While Braintree’s girls’ Basketball team played an amazing game on the court, the Braintree fans also known as Wamp Nation, brought their A game as well. Throughout the girl’s games leading up to Saturday’s game at UMass Boston, Wamp Nation has been changing things up a bit. They began to assign a theme to each game. It all started at the Braintree vs. King Phillip game when the theme was “Formal Frenzy”. The students all wore formal attire (homecoming dresses, prom dresses, suits, etc.); it certainly confused the opposing team and it was all in good fun. At the next game Braintree played Bishop Feehan at Massasoit and the theme was Western. The entire fan section was filled with cowboys and cowgirls. There were even a few cows and horses in attendance! At the UMass game vs. Newton North the theme was “Beach Day” and there is no doubt that the enthusiasm and positive feedback helped the players to power through this difficult game. Hundreds of students from Braintree High showed up with flip fops, sunglasses and beach attire ready to cheer their hearts out for their team.
The girls will play on Monday at the TD Garden against Lynn-English. The school has arranged for fan buses to bring students into the Garden and I’m positive there will be a huge turnout. This is the third year in a row that the Braintree girl’s basketball team has made it to the Garden. With such an amazingly talented team of girls and their enthusiastic fan base, they have a recipe for success. I wish the best of luck to the girls and can’t wait to see the game, it should be a good one!
