The Taster: Potbelly Sandwich Shop

Potbelly Sandwich Shop is the new chain to come to Braintree, setting up shop next to Five Guys and Qdoba. Battling the local sub shops like Rosies, Double G’s, it targets a market toward the “healthier” option promoting fresh ingredients and a promise of high quality meats, cheeses, and veggies. The Taster was referred to this place by a person who works closely with the establishment, and suggested the Pizza Sub. The Taster also dabbled into the healthy realm (very rare) with Uptown Salad and the results were truly shocking…

Pizza Sub: 6/10

I need to be honest, when I first heard the name my juices were flowing. I love pizza, and love subs, how has it taken this long for someone to combine the two? I was envisioning a pizza, rolled up, smushed in between a sub roll, or something cool I didn’t even know about. But when I unwrapped the package of uncertain delight, I was unamused. Consisting of meatballs, capicola, provolone, pepperoni and marinara, it was meagerly filled and left me wanting more. The bread was nicely toasted, but the marginal filling tasted like a glorified Hot-Pocket (no disrespect to Hot-Pockets, I love them, but at this price I wanted more), and left me still hungry. Luckily, I ordered a salad as well.

Uptown Salad: 8/10

After my hunger was unsatisfied from the letdown of the pizza sub, I opened up the bowl of salad and, to my surprise, it was large and hearty. Ingredients include grilled chicken, grapes, apples, dried cranberries, candied walnuts, red onions and blue cheese with a nice vinaigrette dressing. The salad was hearty, tasty, and filling. The dried cranberries, walnuts, apples, and chicken all paired well with the blue cheese and the vinaigrette. I’m not a salad person by any means, but if I am in the mood for a filling salad, this is a contender for my go-to.

Overall: 7/10: Taster Mediocrity
After being let down by the meager sub (and after asking around, many people said the same thing: good bread but very little substance), I never thought I would say this, but the salad was the redeeming quality of this place. The prices were high for such small portions. In the end, if I want a salad, this may be a great option. If I want a sub, this is one of the last places I would suggest.
