Class of 2017
The BHS Math Team has made it to the state level competition for the first time in the school’s history.
After a divisional playoff meet on Thursday, March 4th, Braintree High’s Math Team defied all expectations and made it into the state finals.
Two teams of five mathletes from BHS competed at Sharon High School. These teams included seniors Kevin Tang, William Wan, Dan Pettit, Leah Tan, juniors Namita Arunkumar, Sharon He, Lin Yuan, sophomores Yannis Lam and Alex Yu, and freshman Patricia Chan.
In the Southeastern Massachusetts Mathematics League (SMML) during the school year of 2014-15, Braintree earned a final ranking of second out of six for Division 3, and fourth out of thirty six teams in the league, qualifying to advance to the state finals.
For meetings on the first Thursdays of each month from October until February, mathletes across the region competed after school in five rounds of individual competition and one round of team competition. The five individual rounds assessed highschoolers on topics including arithmetic and number theory, algebra 1, geometry, algebra 2, and advanced topics. The final team round assessed the entirety of the teams on their ability to comprehend any combination of the previously stated topics.
Coach Wood congratulated her team, declaring that “This is the most talented math team that I have worked with at BHS. I am so proud of all of them!” There is a long road ahead, as Braintree will now be represented by a team of eight in the state competition today, March 27, in Shrewsbury. Braintree will represent the SMML along with Sharon, Thayer Academy, Dover Sherborne, and Mansfield.
With all of their accomplishments this year, the math team has certainly fulfilled their motto “WE PUT THE ‘BRAIN’ IN BRAINTREE”!
