“Hey, yaaa, hey yaaaa,” sings Morgan Brown and Thomas McArdle, of the class of 2015. It’s Saturday afternoon and I am standing across the counter of Potbelly’s Sandwich Shop. A retro sandwich chain, with roots in Chicago, Potbelly’s is known for their made-to-order toasted sandwiches.

Potbelly’s Music

Potbelly’s opened its doors in Braintree, Massachusetts just a few years ago, but they have become a wild success, even next door to competitors are popular as Five Guys Burgers and Fries.
Tom has been playing the guitar since he was only eight years old. Over the past four years, Tom has been performing in local bands in the South Shore area. One of his more popular gigs was as the bass guitarist for the local band Reflex.

These days, Tom can be found at Potbelly’s, guitar in hand, on Saturdays and Sundays from 12:00 pm until 3:00 pm. “Saturday is my favorite day to perform,” Tommy explains, “because I get to do what I love, play music, for a few hours, and hang out with my friends that stop by to watch.”

Tommy is a true performer. His favorite song to perform at Potbelly’s is Mardy Bum by Arctic Monkeys “because it is an overall entertaining song for the audience and it is also entertaining to play, due to the great lead guitar part, and solo.” Performing for the audience’s enjoyment, Tommy says that his favorite part about entertaining others is that it “makes life a lot more interesting.”
Morgan has been playing the guitar since he was seven years old. At Braintree High School, Morgan played in the band, jazz band, and participated in the school musicals. Although Saturday is Morgan’s favorite day of the week to perform at Potbelly’s, he also performs on Sundays from 12:00-3:00 pm and Mondays from 5:30-8:00 pm. Morgan says he enjoys playing in a live environment because “it includes all of the things I love to do: play music, be with my friends, and hopefully make others happy.”

Although the chocolate shakes contribute to Potbelly’s popularity, the reason I stop by every weekend is for the live music. Normally, Morgan and Tom perform together on Saturdays and Sundays. Some of their most popular songs include Hey Ya by Outkast, Mr. Brightside by the Killers, and Sunday Morning by Maroon 5.

If you enjoy live music, toasted sandwiches, and a fun environment, then be sure to stop by Potbelly’s from 12:00-3:00 pm on Saturdays and Sundays, and 5:30-8:00 pm on Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday.
