On October 30th, 2011 the Braintree community suffered a devastating loss when beloved teacher and coach Kyle Piazza lost his battle to cancer. Mr. Piazza was a dedicated math teacher and talented coach of both the football and track teams. As an educator, mentor, and friend to countless students, Mr. Piazza inspired the youth of Braintree to succeed, and thus the Kyle J. Piazza Scholarship Fund was created in order to continue his mission and keep his memory alive.

In support of the scholarship fund, the Braintree High School student council will hold its annual Hoops for Hope fundraiser on Monday, March 17th at 7 pm in BHS’s H. Fred Herget Gymnasium. This event will showcase the athletic talents of Braintree High’s very own faculty as they take on the 2013-2014 boys and girls varsity basketball teams. The varsity dance team, who clinched their sixth consecutive state championship at the MSSAA Dance State Championship at Needham High on March 1st, qualifying them for the New England Championship in Bellows Falls, Vermont, will be performing during intermission at the event.

Both basketball teams had tremendous seasons, with the boys team finishing the regular season with an impressive record of twelve wins and eight losses, while the Lady Wamps dominated the Bay State League at nineteen wins and only one loss. Unfortunately, the boys lost a hard-fought game to Newton North 59-57, a disappointing end to an excellent season. The girls, the number one seed in the MIAA tournament, are still alive and are looking to continue their victorious season. The winter season was also highlighted by an undefeated season by the JV boys basketball team and successful tournament runs by both hockey teams. Student council invites all members of the community to come enjoy a meaningful night of entertainment and celebrate the life and legacy of Mr. Piazza.

Tickets are $5, or $3 for anyone wearing an “I Hate Cancer” shirt, which will be on sale at all lunches leading up to the event, and will be sold at the door. The student council advisor, Ms. Forger, can be reached at if there are any questions regarding the event or donations to the foundation.
